Umran Malik Cricket Career
Beginning of His Cricket Journey
Umran’s cricket journey began with tennis-ball cricket in Jammu. Unlike players who enter professional academies at a very young age, he initially developed his skills by playing local matches.
His natural pace was already impressive. As he moved towards leather-ball cricket, coaches noticed that he could bowl considerably faster than many players of his age.
His transition to organised cricket became a turning point and eventually opened the door to the Jammu and Kashmir domestic setup.
Umran Malik’s Jammu and Kashmir Career
Umran gradually became involved in the Jammu and Kashmir cricket system. His pace and potential helped him attract attention despite having relatively limited experience in organised cricket.
He had to work on accuracy and consistency because raw speed alone was not enough to succeed at higher levels.
His performances eventually attracted the attention of IPL scouts, creating the opportunity that changed his professional career.
How Umran Malik Joined Sunrisers Hyderabad
Umran Malik’s connection with Sunrisers Hyderabad began after his pace attracted attention within the franchise setup. He initially became involved as a net bowler, where he had the opportunity to bowl to established IPL batters.
His Jammu and Kashmir teammate and friend Abdul Samad also played a role in helping him get noticed by the franchise.
The opportunity gave Umran access to professional facilities, experienced coaches and international-level players. It became the foundation for his eventual IPL breakthrough.
Umran Malik IPL Debut
Umran Malik made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad on 3 October 2021 against Kolkata Knight Riders.
His debut immediately attracted attention because of his ability to bowl at extreme speed. Even before he had established a large wicket-taking record, his pace made him one of the most exciting young players in the competition.
His IPL debut marked the beginning of his transformation from a relatively unknown domestic bowler into an internationally recognised fast-bowling prospect.
Umran Malik IPL Career
Umran represented Sunrisers Hyderabad during the most important early stage of his IPL career. His performances were built around pace, aggressive lengths and the ability to surprise batters with deliveries above 150 km/h.
His current IPL record stands at 26 matches and 29 wickets, with best bowling figures of 5/25.
After his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Umran became associated with Kolkata Knight Riders, giving him another opportunity to rebuild his IPL career.
Umran Malik’s Breakthrough IPL Season
The IPL 2022 season was the biggest breakthrough of Umran Malik’s career.
He played 14 matches and took 22 wickets for Sunrisers Hyderabad. His ability to repeatedly bowl above 150 km/h made him one of the most exciting performers of the season.
His best performance came against Gujarat Titans when he recorded 5 wickets for 25 runs.
His outstanding season earned him the IPL Emerging Player of the Season award and helped him receive his first India call-up.
Umran Malik and His 150+ km/h Pace
The most recognisable feature of Umran Malik’s bowling is his ability to consistently bowl at 150+ km/h.
Very few Indian fast bowlers have regularly operated at this speed. His extreme pace allows him to attack batters with hard lengths, short balls and deliveries aimed at the stumps.
However, his development has also focused on accuracy, variations and bowling discipline because maintaining pace alone is not enough for long-term success.
Umran Malik’s Fastest Delivery
Umran Malik has been credited with a speed-gun reading of approximately 157 km/h, recorded during IPL 2022.
Earlier, he had bowled at around 152.95 km/h during IPL 2021, which was among the fastest deliveries bowled by an Indian in that season.
His repeated 150+ km/h deliveries established him as one of India’s fastest modern bowlers.
Umran Malik’s India Debut
Following his outstanding IPL 2022 campaign, Umran Malik received his first opportunity to represent India.
He made his T20I debut against Ireland on 26 June 2022. Later that year, he made his ODI debut against New Zealand on 25 November 2022.
His international debut was the biggest milestone of his career at that stage and confirmed that selectors viewed him as a serious fast-bowling prospect.
Umran Malik T20I Career
Umran has played 8 T20I matches for India and taken 11 wickets. His best T20I bowling figures are 3/48.
His T20I career showed both his potential and the challenges associated with developing an express fast bowler. International cricket requires greater control, consistency and tactical awareness than many domestic competitions.
His pace remained his strongest weapon, but injuries and competition for places affected his opportunities.
Umran Malik ODI Career
Umran made his ODI debut against New Zealand in November 2022.
He has played 10 ODIs and taken 13 wickets, with best bowling figures of 3/57.
His ODI performances showed that his pace could also be used in the longer white-ball format. However, maintaining control and economy while bowling at extreme speed remained an important part of his development.
Umran Malik India A Career
Before becoming an international player, Umran was also involved with India A.
India A cricket provided him with valuable exposure to higher-level opposition and professional cricket environments. It also gave selectors the opportunity to evaluate his ability outside the IPL.
His development through domestic cricket and India A eventually contributed to his selection for the senior Indian team.
Umran Malik’s Career Setbacks and Injuries
Umran’s career has not followed a completely smooth path. After his rapid rise, injuries interrupted his progress and limited his opportunities.
Fast bowlers who regularly operate at extreme pace place significant physical demands on their bodies. Maintaining fitness, managing workload and protecting the bowling action are therefore particularly important for Umran.
His injury setbacks came at a difficult time because he was trying to establish himself as a regular international bowler.
Umran Malik’s Comeback Journey
After spending a considerable period away from competitive cricket, Umran began working towards a comeback through domestic cricket.
His return to competitive cricket was an important stage because he needed to regain match fitness, bowling rhythm and confidence.
The comeback also showed his determination to continue pursuing international cricket despite the setbacks he experienced.
Umran Malik Latest Cricket Career
Umran’s recent career has been focused on returning to full fitness and rebuilding consistency after injury problems.
He has been associated with Kolkata Knight Riders, while his IPL opportunities have been affected by fitness setbacks.
His immediate challenge is to remain healthy, perform consistently in domestic cricket and regain the confidence that made him one of India’s most exciting fast-bowling prospects.

Why Is Umran Malik Called Jammu Express?
Umran Malik is known as the “Jammu Express” because of his Jammu roots and his extraordinary bowling speed.

Umran Malik Future in Indian Cricket
